Lisa Curry: It's Good Business to Give Back

Thirty years ago, I was just graduating from college and looking for my first teaching job. It’s hard for me to believe that I am old enough to have taught school for so many years! In those 30 years, I have taught at four different schools. Kinkaid wins the prize for longevity. This is my thirteenth year to teach fourth grade at Kinkaid.

Over those 13 years I have witnessed quite a bit of change at Kinkaid: changes in colleagues, administrators, campus improvements…each phase building onto the one before it. These changes have had their share of challenges, but each one also brings new opportunities.

I ultimately understood the whole Kinkaid picture when my first class of fourth graders graduated in 2012. My first commencement was so meaningful. I beamed with pride because I knew I had something to do with the success of those graduating seniors. I had watched them grow physically and academically, participate in extracurricular activities, become leaders, and mature into young adults. Seeing the cycle complete itself made me appreciate the impact I can have on these terrific young people's lives.

Why did I decide to include Kinkaid in my gift planning? Because it is good business to give back to a place that has helped me become the teacher I am today. It's also the right thing to do. And it just feels good. Giving back reminds me of how lucky I am.
